2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty vs. the Competition
Most truck owners don’t really need much truck. They take the kids to school in them and go grocery shopping, and that’s about it. But some people need a truck that can do some real work, and for those people, there are heavy-duty pickups. The Ford F-250 is a favorite in this segment, thanks to a selection of powerful engines and advanced tech to make your work easier. But it’s not the only heavy-duty truck on the market, and in a world where torque and towing capacity really matter, it’s normal to wonder just how the F-250 stacks up to the competition. That’s why Mike Bass Ford has put together this guide to heavy-duty pickup trucks, and what they’re capable of.
Right from the start, we can see that the F-250 has the most available horsepower. But more importantly, it also has a lot more torque. These numbers come from the available 6.7L HO Power Stroke® V8 Turbo Diesel engine, and the numbers for the Silverado 2500HD and Ram 2500 are also possible thanks to available diesel engines. The big drop-off in torque that see in the Titan XD comes from it only being available with a gasoline engine. Overall, while Nissan calls the XD heavy duty, and it is heavier-duty than the standard Titan, it is clearly not anywhere near as capable as the rest of the trucks in this segment. In fact, the lower-priced F-150 can even offer a better towing capacity, but Nissan still insists on calling it heavy-duty.The Silverado 2500HD ties with the F-250 for the number of possible body configurations, and also offers an advanced 10-speed automatic transmission. But the F-250 once again pulls ahead with towing capacity and payload, thanks to a peak torque number that none of the F-250’s rivals can come close to. Lastly, the F-250 offers by far the biggest fuel tank. For long-haul highway trips with a heavy trailer, you’ll really grow to appreciate not having to stop at every single gas station along the way with the F-250.
Ford F-250 Features
The ability to tow more than competing trucks is a great feature, but that doesn’t make a great truck by itself. What makes the F-250 so popular is that this power is easy and comfortable to use. Onboard bed scales make it easy to see how much weight you’re carrying, as well as how evenly it’s distributed, an excellent way to take the guesswork out of loading your truck. Even more tech is available for towing, starting with the “tailgate down” camera, which gives you a clear view as you back up, even if the tailgate is down. Pro Trailer Hitch Assist is available to take over steering, accelerating, and braking to perfectly position your truck for hitching, without the need to jump in and out to continuously check your progress. And the available Pro Trailer Backup Assist can negotiate tricky trailer backups for you, so you don’t have to go through all the usual back and forth. And the Tremor Offroad Package turns the F-250 into an offroader that handles dirt and mud as easily as it handles towing. The interior of the F-250 is a superb mix of comfort and function. This goes beyond comfortable seats, although they are comfortable, with available heating and ventilation. In fact, if you’re one of those people who occasionally has to spend the night in your truck, the available Max Recline seats fold almost completely flat, to give you a surface that’s as close to a bed as possible. The center console converts into a laptop work surface, for those who need a truck to also serve as an office. And for those long trips towing a trailer on the highway, there is an available B&O® Unleashed Sound System by Bang & Olufsen®, which comes with more speakers (18 in total) than any of the premium stereos offered in any competing trucks. For the most capable, easiest to use and live-with truck in the heavy-duty segment, the F-250 is the clear choice.
